Prelude – Secret Rage PBM 6

This continues on from part 1 PBM Thanks & Secret Rage.

It has been a while since I blogged about my #SecretRage PBM campaign, Richie and I have been busy so it has been on the back burner. This at least allowed me to explore ways to link ideas about the potential psychology of spirits, something that relates to two other projects. I considered abandoning this campaign and playtesting my new setting, but since I’ve put a lot of preparation in to this campaign, plus Richie and I wanted to play Werewolf, I decided to stick with things. I participated in #RPGaDay again this year, I mentioned #SecretRage on several of the days. For Day 26 I talked about Ambitions.

This urge to keep changing projects is an ongoing problem for me, so I gave myself a deadline; following advice from The Bestseller Experiment. I finished up the comic pages and the introductory turn as well. Finalising everything for this project helped re-inspire my passion for #SecretRage, plus given me inspiration to run something else, Cyberpunk, D&D, Pendragon, Cthulhu, etc.

I won’t be posting the turn data since I’ve added another player, plus I am considering inviting other players to join in, maybe some of the people from the #RPGaDay community. Below are those comic pages, which once again I found the writing of to be an interesting puzzle to figure out, in part due to writing about a messed-up Luna, but also because comic writing is different.

GollanczFest 2017 part 6

This continues on from my first post about the Gollancz Festival 2017.

After the morning panels were finished I got another chance to talk with Mark Stay (Orion Publishing, Author & The Bestseller Experiment). It was an informal chat with Mr Stay, as he was on hand for any customer or author enquiries. We had a chance to discuss The Bestseller Experiment, and briefly touch on some of the other projects he had mentioned in some of the bonus video chats the two Marks had done, and of course at the time the big query regarding the future of The Bestseller Experiment. I managed to avoid pitching my current projects, and when Mark asked about my work I give a concise overview; I think I did well considering how much I’d have liked to have said 😉

Mr Stay’s welcoming professionalism was even more impressive in person. I had planned on writing about a few things that Mark had highlighted in our chat, like things to keep in mind when discussing a subject that readers and writers alike are so emotionally invested in. Helpfully Mark recently wrote about this subject on his blog: 25 things I’ve learned from 25 years in books… He has also touched on many of these points on The Bestseller Experiment.

Once I knew Richie had finished the morning Writers’ Workshop sessions at Phoenix we meet up for lunch and spent the majority of it frothing about writing. As a bonus I got to have some of my favourite food: sweet buns.

I was quite curious about the Writers’ Workshops, since I had tried to get tickets but it hold sold out. Richie (Richie Digital) has written a lot over the years, he has had a variety of interesting jobs, including a background in community filmmaking. He explained that many of the people at the workshop talked about being in the early stages of writing, and they got good advice from the various authors of note. He also received some great answers, plus since he has actually finished a book, he received the bonus advice of: “What are you doing here? Just get it published.” Like so many productive people it comes down to managing competing priorities, and of course the typical writer’s overly-critical of their own work. Richie said he left the workshops with new inspiration, hopefully 2018 will see his work get picked up.

GollanczFest 2017 part 2

This continues on from my Bestseller and GollanczFest post.

Day 1 of GollanczFest 2017 was on Saturday November 4th. Richie and I had of time to chat about writing on the train as we travelled into London. Since Richie was going to the Writer’s Worksop at the Phoenix, whilst I was going to Foyles for the Panels, we knew we’d have plenty to discuss on the return train home.

I had heard Foyles was quite an impressive bookshop, I can confirm it certainly is, and thus it made for a great location for the event. Since I had over an hour till the panels started I perused the many floors of extensive bookshelves. Eventually I purchased John Yorke’s Into the Woods and settled down to reading for a while; a book both Richie and Mark Stay highly recommend. By the time I went back to the top floor for the event’s start there was quite an impressive queue.

Upon entering the room for the panels, we were given a tote pack. The tote bag’s print design is quite impressive. The bag contained an overview of the event, some striking samples of forthcoming fiction, plus some water and even a chocolate bar. It certainly set the event up well, especially the water, since I’d forgotten to bring any; sadly I had also forgotten to bring Moo & Bat with me for photos.

I got to briefly talk with Mark Stay who was working on the event, both on and off stage. The Bestseller Experiment podcast had officially started at the GollanczFest 2016, and it was great to see Mr Stay at this year’s event, but with the bonus that he is now a bestselling author; shame Mr Desvaux couldn’t be there, but it’s a very long way for him to come for a weekend.

One thing I regret is not talking to any of the people I was sat near. Undoubtedly anyone that had turned up was passionate about reading, and likely writing. Whilst it is likely the room had many shy book readers, it was unlikely any of us was going to freak out, quietly of course, and run out of the run if one of us said hello. Whilst I don’t consider myself shy anymore, I still fell back in to very old habits of feeling awkward about striking up a conversation with the few people I’d made eye contact with; which is extra odd since I had been talking to Mark Stay only minutes earlier. Looking around the room, there were people chatting. Thankfully it was only ten minutes until the first panel started, and armed with my mobile I did a little bit of writing and then checked Twitter.

Since so much happened at the numerous panels, I’ve decided to do separate posts about each of them. I still have lots of fiction writing to do today so I’ll write about the first panel another time: Who you gonna call? Ghostwriters!

I’ve currently focused on the Gingerbread competition, since the deadline of December 4th is fast approaching. I’ve made it my NaNoWriMo writing challenge, and although attending the GollanczFest really made me want to return to my main writing project, I have managed to stay on target; well, not my word count target, but something is better than nothing.

Bestseller and GollanczFest

Last week, November 4th & 5th, was quite the experience as I went to the Gollancz Festival. The event was held at Foyles, a rather grand bookshop in London. I had wanted to go to the writer’s workshop, but that had sold out. Fortunately for me I won tickets to the main Gollancz Festival via the Bestseller Experiment podcast.

Since my friend Richie was going to the writer’s workshop the event also had an extra appeal; we already chat a lot about our writing, and it’s rare we meet up these days. Plus I had not visited his home yet, so after a brief discussion an extended visit was planned.

One thing about long train journeys is at least there is plenty of chance for reading and writing. Even for someone like myself who suffers from travel sickness, trains are generally tolerable for me, plus when I did feel a bit off I stopped writing and changed to listening to an audio book.

Joining me on my journey were Moo & Bat, my mini-fluffy-sidekicks. I planned on taking some silly pictures of them on the train and at the festival, in part because I’ve been thinking through some children story ideas. Plus the Adventures of Moo & Bat amuses my wife.

I’ll write about the Saturday morning Gollancz Festival panels next time. I’ll end this short post by highlighting that the Bestseller Experiment has a Patreon fund. Prelude – Secret Rage PBM 4

This continues on from part 1 PBM Thanks & Secret Rage.

Where and when to start a game are typically essential questions. When I worked at KJC Games I took the long-time running fantasy game Quest and added in role-play with moderation. Since the game had been running for so long, and some customers knew nothing about role-playing, there was a lot of discussion about the best ways to implement such a dramatic change. In hindsight there are so many things I’d like to have done differently, but given the scale of the operation and time pressure, at least it mostly worked out well. So when I proposed this campaign I knew I would need to treat it as another professional undertaking, and not ignore lessons I had previously learned due to being too caught up with enthusiasm.

Years before when I had run my two big Vampire PBM games I had written out very detailed backgrounds, as well as spent a lot of time discussing things with the players. The Elder Night City PBM game had even more background than the Methesulah game, in part because I was merging R. Talsorian’s Cyberpunk with the World of Darkness (WoD), plus the WoD timeline had moved forward by many years. Although two players were replaced, since they lacked the time to play, surprisingly the final sixteen players eagerly read everything and put a lot of effort in to their turns 🙂

The previous bit of nostalgia was at the forefront of my mind when working on Secret Rage. Since Richie and I know the World of Darkness so well, at least I didn’t need to write a synopsis of the cosmology and numerous powerful organisations. This brought me back to the essential question, instead of having the character be somewhat established, why not set the game before the spirit even existed, or better yet at the birth of the spirit. This was somewhat inspired by a local role-player who decades ago was somewhat infamous for setting his D&D games at level 0. The joke became that in the next campaign the players would be playing the grandparents of their characters, with the goal being to make sure their family got born. Then the next campaign their grandparents’ dogs.

Since Richie is an artist, and a lover of comics, I had the idea of making the prelude a comic. I am not much of an artist, and I need to be careful about my ever present wrist RSI, so I accepted that I could not make it high quality. As spirits are more abstract than mortals, I thought this simpler approach could even turn out to be something distinct. Whilst I cannot use speech recognition software to draw, I can use things like https://pixabay.com/ for free artwork, and a few minutes with GIMP https://www.gimp.org/ isn’t a problem. Apart from using a few Werewolf glyphs I decided it was best to avoid using any official artwork, which is a shame since the WoD has some amazing art.

PBM Thanks & Secret Rage

A while ago when I was mostly bedridden several of my friends would skype with me. It really helped to have some extra communication, and thankfully with a wireless headset it meant I could rest in bed. One of my long-time friends is Richie; he’s self-employed working from home, and has a young child, so he’s ludicrously busy, yet he still allocated time for me.

In addition to saying thank you to Richie for his support, I have tried to offer small gifts to show my appreciation. Richie and I first role-played together well over twenty years ago. Due to his busy life he’s not able to game regularly, so I thought a Play By Mail (PBM) game would do us both good, neatly sliding in to his hectic life schedule, at whatever pace he could manage. I wrote an introductory series to PBM here.

Roughly a year ago we discussed playing old White Wolf’s Aberrant game, since Richie’s a fan of comics, but he’d not played that setting yet. Aberrant has a rich Supers setting with mature themes, and lots of world changing powers to explore. Sadly this game never quite got going due to how busy Richie always is, and since I was still struggling with my health I didn’t push the subject. I have managed to offer a few other things as thanks, for example I made this small thing a while ago when he was ill:

More recently I returned to the idea of offering a better present by running a PBM game. As we are both writers I considered proposing a classic style Dungeons & Dragons game emphasising the Hero’s Journey arc. Although this may feel a bit too cliché to many role-players, I think it is worth keeping in mind that there is so much you can do with good old D&D, there are so many settings and styles of gameplay. I also considered a Cthulhu game, given the single player nature of this game maybe doing something along the lines of Groundhog Cthulhu: Live, Go Insane, Die, Repeat. Or maybe going a bit over the top and running a GURPS Infinite Worlds game. I went through lists of other RPGs, even games that I’d not tried out yet. Eventually I settled on a game that I thought was the most likely to get Richie to bite, so I suggested the Gift of Werewolf.

We both adore Werewolf: The Apocalypse; well we adore all of the classic World of Darkness (cWoD). Despite how much we played Werewolf, we still want to play more, both feeling the genius game was overlooked by many gamers, and those who did take an interest in the World of Darkness games typically favoured Vampire. Over the years when I’ve been asked to pick to my favourite cWoD game I’ve always picked the World of Darkness as a cohesive whole, since that was how I always ran the setting. So my friend knows that when I suggested Werewolf, I really meant the cWoD with the primary focus being Werewolf.

After some chats I made a list of ideas for the Werewolf PBM for us to discuss further, and things quickly developed; typically I wanted to do something more and a bit different than my previous games. The initial premise was Richie playing a lone Garou, however, role-playing a lone Garou is a bit depressing; they are primarily pack animals after all. So I proposed a game spanning eons, we could use Past Lives to allow for story that covered such a time period, a chance to explore a powerful historical and social background of the Garou, and it could be about preventing the Apocalypse. The new White Wolf Publishing company are working on a new World of Darkness, one that roughly continues from the classic, without the Apocalypse/Gehenna/Ascension ending. Whilst we are waiting for those products I considered this to be an intriguing idea.

Over the course of a few weeks I played about with the premise and kept coming back to wanting to do something more like my Vampire Methuselah and Elder PBM campaigns. Meanwhile Richie wrote a cool short story, things were a go. I then had a more intriguing campaign idea, one that would take the Past Lives plan to an even bigger level, and take the game in a radically different direction. It didn’t involve abandoning what we’d initially set out to do, and Richie’s story would tie-in.
